Newport
National Golf Club is a private golf club located
in Middletown, Rhode Island. The club will comprise
two 18-hole Championship Golf Courses. The East
Course, or Orchard Course will be exclusive to
members, while the West Course, or Vineyard Course
will be open to the public.
Orchard Course
An eighteen-hole private championship golf course.
The course was originally permitted through RIDEM
in a format that was unsuitable to the client,
and town authorities. NE&C undertook a comprehensive
re-design of the drainage system to serve a new
course layout, and to satisfy the concerns of
the town authorities regarding potential detrimental
impacts to downstream areas. Several innovative
storm water management techniques were incorporated
into the re-design, including reduced pipe sizes
and the extensive use of depression storage throughout
the course. Dry swales were recommended to replace
water quality basins minimizing areas of standing
water and reducing the possibility of creating
nuisance habitats for insects. Excess
volume in the irrigation storage pond was used
to provide detention for storm runoff flows. The
irrigation pond capture system, stream crossings
and site infrastructure were also re-designed
to conform to the new course layout, and to provide
improved facilities.
A small rural stream and an associated wetland
flood plain bisect the project site. NE&C
performed a detailed stream catchment analysis,
including prediction of flood and drought flows
and flood plain delineation throughout the site
to support the permit application to RIDEM, and
to demonstrate that the project would have no
detrimental impacts on the flow in the stream.
The revised permits were received in time for
the construction to begin on schedule. The course
is now substantially complete, and due to open
in July 2002. NE&C has been retained to design
a second course for the Newport National Golf
Club. The design of the West Course, or Vineyard
Course is currently underway.
