Hudson
Asphalt Deep Draft Bulkhead, Providence River, Providence,
RI
The
Hudson Asphalt Company planned to utilize newer
ships requiring drafts of 40 feet. The Hudson
Asphalt Bulkhead was originally designed and built
in the 1920's to service ships up to 32 feet of
draft. An analysis of the existing structure was
required to determine the stability of the aging
granite block bulkhead. NE&C conducted diving
inspections and borings to determine the condition
of the 80 year old structure and the conditions
and values of the soil around the structure.
A significant analytical evaluation was undertaken
to determine if the additional 8 feet of dredging
and removal of an armored toe protection system
would undermine or weaken the bulkhead. It was
determined through analysis using modern software
and current geotechnical and structural engineering
practices that the factor of safety and design
methods used in the 1920's allowed for the present
alteration without effecting the stability of
the structure. After completion of dredging operations
the bulkhead will be suitable for newer ships
requiring a 40 foot draft.
